THE RAUMAI TRAGEDY.
JACKSON SENTENCED SIX TEARS' HARD LABOUR. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 16. After a two days' trial at Palmerston North, George Jackson was found guilty of the manslaughter of his son, Thomas, at Raumai on Juno 2!). Accused made tho following statement;: —" I did not intend to wound Tom. I saw that a row wa.s coming, and thought the knife would frighten him. I did not know I had struck him. I loved my hoy." He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment with hard labour. A Press Association message received on Juno 30 said:—A tragedy occurred at Raumai, between Ashiiurst and Pohangina, yesterday. A farmer named George Jackson, residing with his wife and family, attacked his eightccn-year-old son, Thonns, with a knife. _ The quarrel arose in tho lioMse at dinner, and it is alleged that; Jackson seized a knife and stabbed his son. Realising what ho had done, Jackson saddled a horse and galloped to Ashhurst for medical assistance, which he procured. The young man was brought to tho Pt/lmerston North Hospital, whero his condition became worse late last night, and he died about eight o'clock this morning. _________
