COST OF AMMUNITION.
ENORMOUS SAVINGS EFFECTED. PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE'S LABOURS. AustraJii-i and X.Z. Cable Association. (Received August 15, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, August 14. The Public Accounts Committee estimates that notwithstanding the rise in wages a saving; of £43,000,000 has been effected in the cost of ammunition for 1917 by tho institution of a development system, under which it i 8 possible to ascertain the exact cost of production. Upwards of £8,000,000 was spent at tho Gretna factory, our largest projectile shell-filling establishment. It is estimated that in another twelve months the saving at the Gretna factory will pay for the whole expense compared with tho prices formerly paid to American producers.
