OBITUARY.

Y. W. J. DONALD. The death is announced of Mr Ynyr William James Donald, formerly manager of the Bank of New Zealand, North Dunedin. Ho was born in Lyt/telton, and was a son of the lato Di Donald, one of tho most esteemed of Canterbury's pioneer colonists. He was educated at Christ's College, and afterwards joined the service of the Bank of New Zealand, of which he was an officer at Temuka, nnd at a brauch in O'tago. In 1888 'ho joined tho Cliristchurch office, in which he became bill clerk, and was later promoted to the southern managership. He took a very keen interest in volunteer matters, nnd for many years held the rank of captain of the E Battery Field Artillery. He

first joined the Temuka Rifles in 1874. Later on ho joined the Christ's College, Rifles, in which li<> irmained ,'ihout two years. On the formation of the Lyttolton Naval Brigade in IBSO he joined that corps, and was subsequently olcoted lieutenant. Owing to his retnor.il from Canterbury to Otago in connection with his duties in the Hank of New Zealand. Captain Donald retired from the Lyttolton Naval Brigade and joined tho Ota go Hussars, in which lie remained until his return 'to Christehureh in 1888. He was then asked by his old corps, the Lyttolton Naval Artillery, to rejoin with the rank of lieutenant. He accepted this invitation, and remained with the corps until 1890. when he was transferred to the F Battery. Tn 1895 he was promoted to tho position of captain. The funeral took place at the Linwood cemetery this morning.

COLONEL H. SLATER, V.D. Colonel Henry Slater, V.D., died yesterday at his residence, il Sandilaiids," in his seventy-ninth year. Colonel Slater was born in London in 1839, and was educated at private schools. Ho camo to New Zealand in 1859, and was for several years engaged in pastoral pursuits. In 1865 he was articled to his father, and at the expiration of his time, in 1870. ho was admitted a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court, und shortly afterwards entered into partnership with his father in the firm of Slater and Son, which was established in 1860. In his business Mr Slater continued right up till the time ot his death. There -was no member of the Bar better known or respoctrd m Canterbury than Colonel Slator. For twenty vears he was honorary secretary of the Canterbury Law Society, and from 1894 to 189G ho was president. Colonel Slater was a very old church worker in the parish of Avonside. He was superintendent of the Sunday school, churchwarden and vestryman for many years, and up till three or lour years ago was chancellor of the diocese of Christehureh. lie represented Avonside in the synod for many years. Colonel Slator was even better known as a Volunteer. In 1865. just fifty-two years ago, he joined the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, and was in command of'tho corps for some time. Ho was promoted to the rank of major in 1883. and to that of lieutenant-colonel in 1899. In 1885 hf raised and organised the. Canterbury Mounted Rifles, a corps which gained great credit in the province. Although for many years past he had been on tho retired list, he was extremely well read on military matters, and as he was the eldest Volunteer officer in the province, his opinion was always sought- on military questions. Up till the time of his death he was chairman of the New Zealand Court of the Royal Humane Society. Colonel Slater celebrated his seventyeighth birthday on Saturday, August 4. Colonel Slator was one of the founders of the Royal Humane Society. of which ho was president from its establishment till the time of his death. Colonel Slater will be accorded a military funeral on Tuesday afternoon. The cortege will leave "Sandilaiids"' at 3 p.m. for the Avonside Church, where a service will be held. The remains will bo interred in the Avonside Churchyard.
