A French communique says:—North &f St Quentin there was sustained reciprocal artillery fire in the region of Fayet. In. the afternoon we stopped fcwo attacks between Mennenchet Mill and Cepy Farm. The- artillery duel continued violently on the Pantheon-Epine de Chevrieny front. Prisoners state that the morning's attack was prepared, with the greatest care with the object of capturing trenches we carried on July 30. After an artillery preparation the enemy attacked trenches east of Maisons de Champagne. Our fire broke all the assaults. In the centre, where the assailants gained a footing, there was a terrible struggle which ended in our favour, and the whole line was restored. On both banks of the Meuse there were violent artillery in the region of Hill 304 and le Mort Homme and in the Bezonvaux sector. PARIS, August 12.

In Champagne, after an artillery preparation, the enemy delivered a simultaneous attack east and west of Mount Cornillet. Our fire stopped the assaulting waves dead, with heavy losses. North of Mount Cornillet the enemy toenetrated our advanced line, bub a Counter - offensive recaptured the tenches with the exception of oO Metres.
