According to London cable advices. Sir Joseph Maclay, British Shipping Controller, in an interview in Paris, said that 60 per cent .of the British ocean-going ships were now armed with two guns each, and carried the necessary gun crews. The surer remedv for the submarines though, was the intenso construction of vessels capable of traversing the danger zone at considerable speed. All the shipbuilding efforts had been directed to this end, and tho jhips turned out may even exceed 4,000,000 tons in 1918, if the Army gave the workmen, ;ind particularly the technical experts.
