CORRESPONDENCE.

A WARNING. TO THE Eir.TCn. Sir, —I would like 10 sound a note of warning to people in Christchurch in regard to signing any form in connection with any article which is being canvassed from door to door at the present time. A few days ago a couple of strangers, with cast-iron nerves, £Dt- into my house in spite of ; the protests of mv wife. Once inside, they hung on, and the result- was .a signed bargain we are. rather sore about. People, especially the womeni folk, should sign absolutely and refuse admittance to all itinerants. I may say that I have followed up scrao of the statements of these slick gentry, .md found them to he utterly falsa and misleading in every way.—l am, ctu,, BITTEX. Ohrijit-church. August. 11, 1917. THE NEW BRIGHTON TRAMS. j TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I notice that the Christchurch Tramway Board has turned down the two or three little requests made by the North Brighton Burgesses' Association for small improvements in the running of tho North Beach timetable. Some time ago I road, in your paper a statement made by Mr J. A. Fiesher setting oat the increases in revenue on hoth the New Brighton lines for the past twelve mouths. 1 forget the exact figures, but the increase on the North Beach line was .something like double that on the South Brighton route, I would like to point cut here that the figures for South Brighton were larger then they should have been for the following reason : —A monthly concession ticket to New- Brighton (direct route) coti'ts 6s; over tho same number of sections on the North Beach line, viz., live, to Racecourse Road, tho concession card costs (Js 6d. What is the result? All the passengers living in the vicinity of Racecourso Road buy the South Brighton 'ticket at, (3s, which thev can use on the North Beach line and thereby save sixpenco per fortnight-, or in whatever time the ticket takes uo expire. it will be seen, therefore, that South Brighton gets the credit (per concession tickets) of the amount expended therein, when it should really be credited to the North Beach returns. Tn the summer time, when ail the cottages in the vicinity of Racecourse Road are occupied, this amount is fairly substantial. A request that the Burgesses' Association made, but which was turned down, was that the section from Rnweourso Road to the pier bo made one penny, instead of twopence, as hitherto. This is a change which the residents would gladly welcome, a.s the overlapping section to Norton Street is a source of much annoyance. It is ridiculous to ask any person to pay twopence for a rule from Grant'ley Street to any stop past tno coif at! North Beach. in view of the encouraging returns of las't. year, the B'urgessos' Association was ovate justified in asking that- a late car (.11.10 p.m.), be run through to the pier each evening. it comes to Burwood, in any case. The new proposal would be well worth a trial in the summer season. The board apparently realised that 'it was up to it to do something for North Beach, in view of the increased returns. What is that something? A half-hour service in tjio afternoons. which, inaugurated in tho depth of winter, may in all probability, be voted a. non-success, a.r.d be discontinued ere the summer season arrives—ju.it the time when the service should be at) its best, and brightest, in conclusion, _sir, may I suggest to the. Tramway Board that they endeavour to shorten the. run via ike North Baach route. Ten minutes could he saved bv running the No. 10 cars out via Worcester Street, instead of Cashed Street.-, as at present, and diverting ono of the other cars along the Cashel Street route. North Beach is a. place* which is rapidly moving ahead, and the residents feel rather sore regarding the manner in which they are treated compared with their friends in the South, who are provided wi th up-to-date trailers, non-stop iMna to and from the city, etc.. Hoping, sir. 1 have not/ trespassed too much on your space.—l am, etc., NORTH BEACH.
