FREE LEGAL ADVICE.
AMERICAN SOLDIERS' PRIVILEGE. [FeOM OCB COBRESrONDEIfT.] WELLINGTON, August 10. It was suggested to the Minister of Defence bv Mr Witty that the Government should follow the American practice of giving free legal advice to soldiers. The Minister of Defence replied that he was not aware that free legal advice is given in America to men going on active service. Wi'th respect to New Zealand, th e Public Trustee has an office at Trentham, open on Wednesdays and Fridays, when a solicitor is in attendance for the purpose of taking instructions for the preparation of wills, powers, of attorney, etc., such work being done free of charge. Should there he any points which it is impossible for this solicitor to attend to the commandant grants leave to men to visit Wellington to interview the solicitor of the Public Trust Office. If legal advice is required in reference to the management of an estate while a soldier is at the front or after death the Public Trust Office arranges details without charge. The Minister stated that it also was within his knowlodge that in some cases private solicitors were assisting soldiers free of charge.
