Our Correspondent.] LADY LIVERPOOL TRENCH COMFORTS FUND. As was anticipated, the Lyttelton Ladies' Swimming Club " Rift afternoon," held on Tuesday, was a great success-, there beina about 200 present. Vocal, instrumental and elocutionary items were contributed by Mr R. A. Home's concert party, of Christchurch, consisting of "Mr and Mrs Home, Misses Hankinson, Hamilton and Messrs Hobb and Gilmour, who generously gave their services in providing an entertainment- that was heartily appreciated. Tho president of the club. Mrs Colin Cook, thanked Mr Home for so kindly assisting to make tho afternoon such an enjoyable one. She also thanked tho Rev J. 11. Hewland for his k('K!11 ess in lending the Holy Trinity Schoolroom free of charge for the occasion and to the club's committee, who had so ably organised the '"gift afternoon." ') tin* of C 1 packets soap, 26 tins of sweets, tin biscuits, 1 packet writing paper, G tins of tobacco, 2 boxes of c:-r;irs, 5 tins of .sugar, 1 tin tea, 4 tins jam, 1 tin golden syrup, 1 soup packet, 2 pairs mittens, 2 scarves and 3 balaclavas: total, 251 parcels. A presentation was made on Saturday last by employees of the Lvttelton Borough Council to Private J. R. Morgan, of the Twenty-ninth Reinforcements. who previous to enlisting was employed as engineer to the council. Mr IT. H. Barnard, the Borough Council engineer, made the presentation, which took the form of a wristlet! watch, and wished Private Morgan a safe return. DIAMOND HARBOUR. Section owners at Diamond Harbour have been very unfortunate in losing a. large number of young trees recently planted, owing to ca't.tjle and horses breaking through tho fences and destroying them. In one instance seventy young trees planted onl;£ a few weeks ago on council property by a "working beo" were all destroyed, and in another case a number of trees were, destroyed on the property of a. resident of Lyttelton. In yet another caso fences on the property belonging to a returned soldier were considerably damaged, having been trampled down. As the council has two or three horses over at Diamond Harbour, which it is cloimfxlj are doing part of the damn go, th(o question has been asked whether the council should not re-erect the fences destroyed, or at least do something tlo protect the interest of section owners in the new suburb. It mav hero be mentioned that the counoil printed a, pamphlet prohibiting closed fences and asking property owners to erect only open fences and to plant hedge trees, which the council would protect from stock. Unfortunately this does not appear to have beer, earned out. BILLIARD TOURNAMENT. In this week's billiard tournament match between the members of the Lyttelton Olub the " flying 50 handicap" was won by Mr H. Blackler, who scored in the final from Captain Murray. CHALLENGE MATCHES. The challenges thrown out to the Coastal Defence Corps by the Lyttelton Club to a shooting and billiard match woe? accepted by the former and decided on Tuesday evening at the Lyttelton Club Hall. The miniature rifle shooting contest resulted in a very evenly contested match for honours, the C.D.G. only beating their opponents by five points. Following is tho result of the scoring:— C.D.O. A. Agar . . , . 24 Total . . • ... 688 In the billiard tournament the Lyttelton Club were more successful, although the win was not a very easy one, as they were only 78 points in the lead at the finish, the sides being fourteen strong. LYTTELTON BOWLING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Lyttelton Bowling Club, which was held on Thursday evening, was a very enthusiastic one, considerable interest being taken in the election of officers and the welfare of tho club by those present. A motion was carried authorising the secretary to raise the subscription fee for the coming year from two guineas to three guineas, with a view to putting the club's finances on a more sound footing. Mr W. Brown gave a donation of £2 2s to bo put into the funds of the club or for prize-money. Mr C. 11. Agar, the newly elected president, promised four gold buttons to be played for in rink matches, the buttons to be known as the " Agar Buttons." Donations were also received from Messrs J. Garrard, J. Young, J. T. Norton, E. H. Henderson, Captain Hutchinson, J. D. Miller and J. Gower. It was reported by the assistant-sec-retary, Mr F. E. Sutton, that the club's past season had been a most successful one, and the compstitions had been most enjoyable. Tho games had been contested in the right spirit, and the play of most of the members had been of a very high standard—proof that the members had taken keen interest in the game. The club wished to thank tho different clubs affiliated to the Cliristehurch Centre for the most enjoyable .games which thev had plnyed on their greens, but unfortunately the local club had not been in a position, owing to the state of the green, tn trive tli6 town clubs a return matcli.

In the Maddison Trophy, which is tho singles championship of Canterbury, and the most coveted prize of all bowlers, Mr E. H. Henderson, represented tho club, having won it outright for the second time since the match had been in vogue. Although tho club had been only two years in existence it had won outright the champion doubles, 1916, and champion singles, 1917. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr C. H. H. Henderson; green superintendent, Mr H. IT. Barnard. LATENT INDUSTRIES. Mr L. M'Arthur paid an informal visit to Lyttelton on Thursday at tho request of Councilor F. G. Norton to make arrangements for an official inspection of ihe borough and its surroundings to investigate tho possibility of establish;n 2 latent industries. '' FLOWER DAY." Tho local branch of the Red Cross Society have decided to hold a flower day on Wednesday next in aid of the Red Cross Fund. Arrangements are being made for a number of ladies to sell the flowers along the main streets. SURPRISE PACKF.T DAY. The Surprise Packet Committee are entirely satisiied with Lyttekoiv's Jirsfc effort in running a " Packet Day," but the greatest surprise of all was tho fact tliat tho proceeds totalled £217 16s lid, double the amount that was anticipated. Hie success was due to a great extent to the generous and wliole-hoartccl way in which deddents of tho bays came forward with .their donations.
