THE GREYMOUTH CASE. THREE YEARS' REFORMATIVE TREATMENT. His Honor Mr Justice Denniston presided yesterday at the resumption of • tlie criminal sessions ol the Supreme Court, when the trial ' was continued of William Henry Dunphy (Mr Joyce, with him Mr Sargent) on a, charge of robbing and assaulting at Groymouth on October 7 last a Chinese storekeeper named Chow Hing. Tlio hearing had already occupied two days,-the evidence having been completed on the previous da v.

The jury returned a verdict of guilty,on all count?. In reply to the usual inquiry to tho prisoner. as to why sentence should noc bo passed upon him, Mr Joyce said that Dunphy had hitherto borne a good character, find was only twenty-two years of a/ge. He had enlisted twice, but his r/other had objected, as ho was under age. The prisoner interjected that the Greyniouth constable had intimidated four of hi.s (Dunphy's) witnesses. His Honor said that it was not a judicious .attitude for the prisoner to take up. It could not be suggested that was why the prisoner had not given evidence in this trial. Tho constable had appeared to have acted very fairly, and it there had l>cen any suggestion of intimidation prisoner s counsel would have referred to it. Mr Raymond said that there was no previous conviction against the accused. Idleness.was probably the cause of the trouble. The police report f"°™| that ho had been mixing with bad. company. , ~ , His Honor said that he entirely concur rod-with tho verdict; the evidence was overwhelming. The cnine was an. extremely serious ope, and ono deserving a severe sentence. But, owmg to the prisoner's a»o and previous-good character, some leniency could be shown to him. He would have -ito undergo reformative treatraeat tor a period not exceeding three years. An order was made for the return of the money found in the prisoner s possession to Chow Hing. # , His Honor complimented the jury on the manner in which they had dealt with what m'ust have been a painful case, and discharged them from further attendance during the sessions.
