FEDERAL BUDGET.
TAX ON ELIGIBLES. Australian and Gable Association. (Received August 10, 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, August. 10. Tn the House of Representatives, the Bill giving preference of employment in the public service to returned soldiers was read a first time. Sir John Forrest, referring ito the tax on eligible* proposed a tax of 10 per cent on the taxable amount of income, with a minimum of £'lo.
A cable dated August S .stated that the now taxation proposals included an additional income .tax of 10 per cent, with a minimum of £lO in each case of widowers without children and unenlisted single men of from L'l at to years. This was expeeted to produce £'.">00.()00 in the present, year, and would be devoted to the repatriation of soldiers.
