There is an old tradition that whenever a policeman is wanted urgently ho is not to he found. Such a pofuiou occurred at, the Supreme Court to-day. There were constables '"'to burn," as the. saying is. and even a sergeant, a gaoler, two warders and a. detective, but. the particular detective required to givo evidence was not forthcoming. After a good flea] of speculation as to where he was, and much running to and fro and ringing up, the Crown decided that the evidence was not necessary, hut tho prisoners in the case announced that- they had some questions to ask the detective, and would glarflv wnit. The Court was just- settling down resignedly when the missing witness arrived. Ho explained his fifteen minutes' delay by a bicycle breakdown, and the Judge forgave him at once.
