The Canterbury Education Board, at. its meeting to-day, ox pressed its sympathy with tho husband .and relatives of .Airs Beatty, mistress of the. Glonroy School, who had cliod recently.

Recently there died in the Napier Hospital a Now Zoalandor, in the person of Mr Douglas Gifrord Moore, who like many another Rriton. has found his way to the lonely outposts of the Empire, and has unostentatiously helped to extend and consolidate her boundaries. Mr Moore was a native of Oamnru, and was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch. He lefr New Zealand as a young man about twenty-five, years ago, and after spending a. few years in Australia ho poceeded to Rhodesia, and later to Cent;a 1 Africa. While, there he hold office as the Chartered Company's representative and Commissioner at Victoria Kails. While carrying out his administrative duties he found time to do a good deal of big game shooting, once nea-ly losing his life while shooting hippo on the Zambesi wth Mr George Grey, the famous shot and brother of Sir Edward Grey. Being possessed of powerful phvsjque and great endura.nce ho was very sucect-'.sf ul as a sportsman and he succeeded in scouring some very fine specimens of sable, and other antelopes, many of the horns ho obtained going to Mr Cecil Rhodes's collection, and others to the British and South African museums. Owing to attacks of fever he left Central Alrica to live ;;t Johannesburg. About two years ago his health broke down luid he was advised to return to New Zealand in the hope thao the air of his native land would effect an improvement. He spent sometime in Rotorun and then came to Napier, who'-o be died after a lingering illness in which his vitality and pluckstood him in good stead to the last.
