AUSTRIA'S PLIGHT.
FEARS OF ITALIAN OFFENSIVE,
"MOST SERIOUS DANGER TO CENTRAL EMPIRES."
Australian and N.Z. Cable Afieociation. (Received August 10, 0.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 9. Official advices state that Austria is frantically fortifying, fearing an early Italian offensive, and has refused Gernviny'vS request for the transfer of many Austrian divisions to Russia. Instead, the Govternment has mobilised older Austrians for the Russian campaign. Vienna believes that the Italian offensive is the most serious danger to the Central Empires this autumn. Austria is said to be increasing hier submarines in the Adriatic and Mediterranean.
