THE CARLTON CORNER.
BEAUTIFYING THE lUVKII BANK. CROQUET OR BOWLING GROUND PROPOSED. The. Gardens Committor of the Domains Hoard to-day visited the portion of the reserve and river bank lying *o the- uorih-'.vest of the Carlton bridge. The visit was paid as the result of representations by the Beautifying Association, which had drawn attention to the wild state of the ground. The curato]-. Mr J. Young, recommended that the corner should bo levelled up, and that the, present old live fence should be replaced with a. rail fence similar to the one at- the Hospital corner. He stated that a nice belt ol' Oriental plants might- be planted along ihc road frontage to protect an area that might be laid down as a croquet or other lawn, provided a club would undertake the upkeep. The rising ground to the tvest could be nieeJy terraced to overlook the greens, while the river bank could be improved and planted with shrubs. Members approved ot the proposal, but asked Mr Young to prepare an estimate of the cost before they finally decided on the undertaking. Meanwhile it was eld-id. d to give the City Council notice to discontinue the tipping of rubbish in the low-lying parts of the ground.
