EXPLOSION ON A VESSEL.
ENGINEER BADLY BURNED.
[Pi;n Press -Association.] WELLINGTON, July 24. A startling accident occurred on + .he steamer Breeze while- liertlied at the King's Wharf yesterday afternoon. About 9000 cases of benzine, had been taken aboard, and tho third engineer, W. Ullrich, was making an examination in the propeller shaft tunnel with a naked light when apparently benzine fumes Avcre ignited, causing a violent explosion. Ullrich Avas blown through from the tunnel to the engine-roora, Avhcre the crew found him lying with his hair singed off and his face and arms severely burned. Ho was sent to the hospital. Officials consider it a marvel that tho vessel Avas not blown up. It is surmised that some of tho cases were leaking, ,and the Avonder is that the flame of tho explosion did not ignito them. The Breeze left for Duncdin Lite last night.
