BUTTER-FAT LEVY.

OLD SYSTEM ABANDONED. [From Ocr Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, July 23. T understand that the Government has definitely decided to abandon the butter-fat levy scheme, though no refunds will be made upon last season's payments The system, it is reported, did not work equitably in regard to the smallest factories, and placed a heavy tax upon small suppliers, who, in the opinion of the Government, should in future be relieved. Condensed milk and dried milk factories are not likely to continue t.n escape- participation in any method of adjusting local prices. The nature of the new scheme has not yet been determined, the Government being anxious to dispose of pressing matters for Parliament's consideration before considering the dairying position, in connection with which there is r.o ne-od for as the season does not open in the most forward districts until a month hence.
