Marcel Hutin states that one of tho nlost desperate battles, probably the most merciless of the, war, terminated south of Cerny (north of the Aisno River) in an incontestable victory for the French infantry and the bloody defeat of the best German troops, represented by the Brandenburg Guards. Heaps of enemy dead testify to tho phenomenal German losses.
