Sir Robert Borden, Prime Minister of Canada, attended the Guildhall recently to receive the new mace for the Canadian House of Commons, which has been presented by Sir Charles Wakefield, the ex-Lord Mayor, and Sheriffs Sir George Touche and Sir Samuel Shcad, to replace that lost in the great fire which destroyed the Parliament buildings. The new maco has a piece of the old mace, which was rescued from the fire, incorporated with it. "It has verily been baptised with fire," said Sir Charles Wakefield in making the presentation, " and is symbolical of the crucial tests through which the Empire is passing, and of its enhanced value, as refined gold, to take a yet worthier place among the nations."
