OLD PEOPLE'S PENSIONS.

FURTHER ACTION BY THE MAYOR. The Mayor is continuing his efforts to havo allowances to old ago pensioners increased. Ho discussed the subject with local members of Parliament a i'eiv months ago. and yesterday he sent the, following letter to Dr Thacker, M.P. You will remember a discussion I had with you and four members of Parliament in the library of the City Council Chambers some time in March regarding increased allowance to old ago pensioners. You all assured mo that nothing could be done until Parliament met. I inferred from what was said that you would make an endeavour to got something liko justico meted out to these deserving old people, who have borne the burden of the day. Tho liigh cost of everything makes it a matter of impossibility for trient to live under present conditions; many are fcr too fesolo to do twy work—they ought not to be expected to do anyj people eighty to ninety-one years of age aro past that. I want to see tho few remaining days of these veterans rnado a little brighter. " I notice that tho British Parliament has increased its allowance by 2s fid a week. I am sure this wealthy country can afford an additional allowance. lam writing Messrs Isitfc and Ell and tho Hon G. W. Russell on tho subject, and hope that something; will rosult to help these aged poor."
