MELBOURNE, July 20
The Federal Government is offering a rewnrd of £2OOO for information regarding the Cumberland out mgr. (I 1 ollowing tho original announcement that the Federal steamer Cumberland had been .seriously damaged on the morning of .July 6 a "few miles off Gabo Island by internal explosions in one of the holds, and had to bo beached, the Australian Navy Office stated that when tho explosions first occurred enormous damage was done lo the ship, a gaping hole being burst in the side, tlirough which a huge volume of water poured. The captain decided at once to make for the nearest land, which was Gabo Island, to beach the vessel, but so serious did the position become, owing to tho inrush of water, that, tho Cumberland was in imminent danger of foundering. It. was, in fact, slowly sinking, but finally grounded in time to prevent total loss. The vessel is now lying in a .somewhat exposed position, with decks awash, and all holds, engine-rooms and boiler-rooms flooded.)«
