ELECTRICAL WORKS.

FOR BOROUGH OF WOOLSTON.

OFFICIAL INSPECTION.

On the completion of the electricity scheme of the borough of Woolston, th« j Mayor (Mr M'Gregov Wright), the chairman of the Electricity Committee, the ex-Mayor (Mr J. J. Graham), and n lfumber of councillors met officially on Tuesday evening at the sub-station erected on the Y oolston Recreation Reserve, adjoining the school, to inspect and fonnallv, open the electricity works. . nr r The electrical engineer, Mr J. Crombie Scott, gave ail interesting description of the transformer and switch, board, and showed tho use of the various meters and indicators. He also explained how the maximum demand indicators, of which there are several on the switchboard, work, and the n©* ces«ity of having them to i egister the load on the transformer, especially when attaining nearly full load, to prevent them burning out. There are two sub-stations in Woolston, and tho engineer explained how they were : coupled The street lighting apparatus is separate from tho other lighting, otfi a panel of its own, and works by means of a clock (one in each, sub-station}, which puts the lights on and off at any set time,.as arranged. The coun. oil decided at its last meeting to put the street lights off at 12.30 a.m. in. future, and the engineer altered the clock accordingly. _ The party were much interested with, the information given by Mr Scott, and he was accorded praise for the efficient manner in •vvhich the work had been carried out, and the splendid lighting of the district, both in the streets and houses, several of those present stating that the lighting waa the best around Christchurch. It was mentioned, that a pleasing feature was that apart from the purchase of material that had to <be imported, tlid whole of the reticulation work had been carried out by the council's own staff, and with one exception all tho employees were Woolston residen^. The buildings were erected by a Wool* ston contractor.

A number of the councillors then proceeded, accompanied by the engineer, to the .second sub-station, similar in every respect to the first, to s r et the clock there.
