WEST COAST SERVICE
[From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, July 19
The discontinuance of the passenger service l>.y the Union Company to the West Coast was made the subject of an urgent question to the Minister of Marine by Mr Colvin, who stated that the company took 20,000 to 30,000 tons of coal monthly from Westport alone, and an almost- similar quantity from Greymouth. Nine or ten boats had been carrying coal during the last fortnight, but not one passenger was allowed; The company was so powerful that no other steamers could carry people to the Coast. • He read a strong resolution from the Westport- Harbour Board, protesting against tlm isolation of the port.
The Minister of Marino replied that he bad received the "Westport resolution, and would immediately telegraph to the Union Company asking it to endeavour to arrange for a passenger service to Westport, which was an isolated place. Dr Thackrr: Send a message to the P. ami 0. Company.
