FRENCH COLONIAL POSSESSIONS.
We appreciate too little the great magnitude of the French colonial possessions. says the .Manchester "Guardian." French Indo-China- alone has an area of over a quarter of a million square miles and a. population oi over 17.C00,000, of which about. 20,000 arc T'/iiropeans. excluding military. Tn face of heavy difficulties, the French have effected great improvements, trade has been organised, and in .some parts (Lancashire will be interested to know) cotton-growing is extending. And in lecent years the rubber industry has bren developed, more particularly in Annain and in Cochin-China. The French colonial possessions altogether (including Algeria and Tunis) have an area of about '1,000,000 square miles, with a population of well over 40.000,000.
