SPREYDON DRAINAGE.
BOARD'S ESTIMATE.
ENGINEER'S FIGURES CRITICISED
At. last evening's meeting of th« Christchuroh Drainage Board a discussion Took place on tho recent estimate from the board's engineer to the Spreydon Borough Council, on tho cost, of a sewerago scheme, for Spreydon. Details of tho estimate showing a total cost of £92,000 were published in tho "Lyttelton Times" of Thursday last. Mr J. Down, referring to the letter from tho Spreydon Council requesting the engineer to supply an estimate, said that usually he, had nothing but compliments for the board's engineer, but in this instance he could not speak so f.avourably. Spreydon did not seem to have been fairly treated. The district was entitled to sewerage, rates having been paid by some of the residents Jong before a, sewer was laid within coo-ee of the district. Why was a.n item of £52,000 included for a, rising main? Another district had been offered to come in without such provision. Il was not. fair to charge one district* and not another. The total of tho estimate had caused a sort of scare.
The engineer. Mr Cuthbert, made his explanation, which tho chairman, Mr W. Hill, endorsed.
Mr H. J. Otley said discussion showed that they could not afford to deal with sewerage in pieee-meal fashion, and that one hip; schema for outside districts was necessary. Mr J. W. Bonnland agreed with Mr Or ley, and said that lie would work to push tho sewering of all tho outside districts.
Mr V. Burgoyne said that no doubtj every district would like, to come in, but the cost was too high. Tho Spreydon Council's letter wag received and the engineer's action approved. .
