SECOND CANTER BURY APPEAL BOARD. SITTINGS IN CHRI6TCHURCH. Tho No. 2 Canterbury IMilitary Service Board sat at Christchurch this morning; present—-Messrs H. W. Bishop," S.M. (chairman), F. T. Eld mitre and M. G. Rich. Major Gresson roprosonted tho military authorities. LEAVE FOR ENGINEERING DEMONSTRATOR. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College, represented by George H. Mason, Registrar, appealed on behalf of Percy George Bamtord, demonstrator to the professor in charge of the School of Engineering.

George Ji. .Mason gave evidence that Mr Bamford had been granted Joave in order to enable the board to fill his position. The board had made every effort to till .Mr Baraiord's place, but had failed, and if he went into camp considerable loss would be sustained by present students. The chairman said it was merely a question whether the training of engineers was more important at present than the making of soldiers.

In reply to questions, witness said that there were men m L'hristchurch qualified to take the position, but they lacked teaching experience, and it would require time to coach, them for uie work. The students principally concerned were, members of the First Division. Loavo was asked for till the end of October. The chairman said that if they were called up the college would not need its demonstrator. After ron.-idoration the board adjourned the appeal pine die, and granted leave until the First Division was exhausted. ENGINEER'S APPEAL.

Percy Randall Scott, engineer, Opawa, was the subject of an appeal by the tirni of Scott .brother?, engineers (Mi; Wright;. George Scott, head of the firm, gave evidence, that I'. R. Scott, his son, enlisted in October last. I*. 1?. Scott was a director of the firm, and his assistonce was necest-ary to carry on the business. Witness himseif had to spend thirty hours a week at. the drawing board. The firm had asked for only one other exemption during the period ot the Mar. A\ itnoss was growing old, and ought to have Ijoen relieved of many of his duties long ago. If the business was essentia), I\ R. Scott was essential to its conduct. If the business Mas non-essential, witness was quite prepared to dose it up. The engineering profession had not been properly regarded in New Zealand in connection with the war. The witness proceeded to quote a statement by the Railway Department to the effect, that none of the fitters in the Department's employ could lie released for military service. Witness added that lie left his house at. 7 a.m. each morning. He was a member of the, T'cch'-iio.-il College Hoard and Lyttelton Harbour Board.

In reply to questions by Major Oresson, witness sairl that George, Scott, jmi.. who was a Tory competent, office engineer, bad been ill for a fortnight. Krod Scott, who was a first-class fitter, was works manage]-. Witness's health was very poor."

J>r Isaac, Thompson gave evidence in stpinort of the application, and answered ouestions put by Major Gresson." George Forsyth, soap manufacturer, and a Justice of tho Peace, also gave evidence in support, of the application. The case came, before the board as an application for rehearing. After hearing the evidence the board confirmed the granting of leave, to Smith till September 17. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE CASES.

Joseph Donohuo, tramway motonnan, Barbour Street, Liuwood (Mr CassidyK v hose appeal had been adjourned pending decision on an application for financial assistance, appeared a'rain, when the decision in regard to financial assistance was communicated to the board. The appeal was formally dismissed, appellant to go into camp on August 20. Percy .Herbert Boyd, contractor and well-sinker, "Wa.imate, who had applied for financial assistance, did not appear, and was ordered to go into camp on August 20. John Andrew Ford Kindlon, joiner, York Street. Opawa. (Mr Cassidy:, who had applied for tinancinl assistance. appeared again. Assistance having been Granted. I he. appeal was formally dismissed. SKCOXD mVISION. The appeal of Henry Austin Bush, farmer. Styx, who produced a certificate showing that he was married in ID]2, was allowed, lie being a member of the Second Division. " 1 don't- think this is gnhir; to save, von.'' remarked the chairman cheerfully. " 1 have, been classed C2," said tho appellant, " but I want to he jn my proper division." HOME SICK VICE. The appeal of Andrew Dunirk, farmer, Broadfields, who had Keen classed C2, was not proceeded with. The hoard then adjourned.
