GENERAL MONRO ENTRUSTED WITH REFORMS.
REORGANISING INDIAN ARMY
Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Carmjchael Monro, who was some time ago invested by the British Government with .powers of investigation and dismissal as u. result of the Mesopotamia fiasco, succeeded General Sir Beauchamp Dutf as Commander-in-Chief in India in August, 1916, was formerly in charge of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, succeeding Sir lan Hamilton. Ho relinquished this position to command the First Army in France. Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Carmichael Monro, who is fifty-six years of age, was appointed to the Mediterranean command (Egypt, SnloniCa and the Dardanelles) in October, 1915, when General Sir lan Hamilton returned to report to the War Office, and it was under his direction that the evacuation of Gallipoli was so successfully carried out. Upon his return he again went to Franco, where he had previously led a division, and took over the command of the First; Army from General Sir Douglas Haig. He is the youngest son of the late Henry Monro, of Craiglockliart. He entered the- army in 1879, obtaining his commission in the old 2nd Foot, now the Royal West Surrey Regiment. In 1897-8 he served in tlio Mohma.nd and Tirah expeditions. During the South African war he served on the staff, taking part in the relief of Kirab'sdey, the Paafdeberg and the Dreifontein operations, was mentioned in despatches and received the brevet of lieutenantcolonel. Ho has held a considerable number of staff appointments at home and abroad, and from 1901 to 1907 he was attached to tho School of Musketry, first as chief instructor, and latterly as commandant. From 1912 until tho outbreak of war lie* commanded the Second London Division- In February, 1915, h© was created K.C.B. Ho married in 1912, the Hon Mary Caroline, daughter of the first Lord O'Hagan. General Monro comes of a family of famous Edinburgh doctors.
