THE PUZZLED GUARD
The compartment was full. One ot the passengers was a clever artist, who amused the others by taking a piece of white crayon from a case and drawing a perfect imitation of a " smash " oil the glass of the door window. At the next station the guard, of the train came along, and the " broken window'' attracted his attention. Opening the door, he inquired who had done it. He was Mire, he said, that it. had been recently broken, or he would have noticed it before.. As everyone in the compartment'pleaded "not guilty," ho became angry and mad o a few sarcastic remarks. The traLn started again, and the artist obliterated his work. When the next station was reached, the guard came along with an inspector. When he saw the window apparently made whole, the look on his face was something to bo remembered. He wisely refrained from approaching the carriage, for all inside were roaring with laughter; there never was a more mystified man in existence than that guard.
