FIXTURES. 3l«ch 7, ft-Neisbn Jockey Club. March B—Timaru Trotting Ciub. , llAr.rlx fc, 10—isapier Park Racing' duo. llareii 15—Waimate Racing Club. Maicn is lfi—Masterton Racing Cmb. ilarcxi 17—Westport Jockey Club Mwcii 17—GpuiuUre RacniK Club.

The plough and tan tracks w«re open at Riocarton this morning, uwst ot the fast- work being done on the piougii, which provided excellent going.

Snub ruled off six furlongs alone m Imm 16 4-oses. The Aiaruan gelding looks in line order, and is moving along well, the tasks allotted him recently having sharpened him up.

Disdainful and Zuland were companions in a &pin over half a mile, wliich they left behind in 49 4-osee, both going ireely.

Biplane was going easily at the end of a five-furlong gallop, winch occupied Imin 4see. The crack two-year-o.cl looks in nice trim for autumn engagements.

Lovesick was a lot too good for Thames in a half-mile sprint, taking oOJsec over the journey.

Flying Start and Good Hope ran six furlongs'together in lrnin 17scc. Flying Start is coming on well, while Goou Hope, having thrown off tho soreness which has troubled him for some time, is moving in improved style.

Wrestler had no difficulty "•:' sprinting half a- mile in oOsec. He h a free worker, who can always be relied on to showplenty of dash.

Adjutant and Don Pacifico ran a mile together in lmin 49sec, both going en well at the end.

Oamccock has not many severe- tasks since his successful trip to "Wingatui. and he had another easy task' to-day. The raring in the south apbears to"have done him good, and he .should be a groat;:/ unproved cult on Lis next appearance in public.

Banian and Art were associated over a mile. They were not out to make iime.. but both horses moved along freely in a useful working gallop.

Tantalus was restricted to easy work, lie wili remain in the Chokcbo.ro Lodge stables until after the "Waimato mooting, when his new owiit. Mr IT. Cassidv, will probably send him to the West Coast-

Kilboy and Rasanof wro together throughout a smart gnlkro over six fnriongs. the distance being left behind in lmin 17scc. with neither fully extended at the finish.

Shrill and 1 Sweet Corn sprinted five furlongs comfortably in lmin 4sec, while Chelomaand Bayonne were companions in a similar task.

Marc Anthony, ivho has got through a lot of Useful work during the last few weeks, was not given n severe task this morning. He is gradually coming back to racing condition.

Porter. Bon and Dionysins finished in that order, with very littio between them, after running half a nrilo in 50 2-ssec.

Fie:v Cross and Tip-up sprinted half fi rr. ; ie in SOsee. Fiery Cross shaping tetter of the pair.

Kamiuoue has resumed work after a few weeks' spell, following on a mi'shan while contesting the Crnvm Pinto .at T hp- Ointerbury .Toekev Club's w : 'l rm into Trerrtb-nr) cami shortly, but Hr-metrns r/r-lding will be kept in J -T'-nirig while h owner i~ in the Tlopi;oion. after which lie will be turned out.

Mr H. G. Taylor is still uimMo to imike (inv definite plans for the i'utuie rating of his team. He would like to make another trip to Sydney, leaving u'jouc May, but- has -experienced a lot of difficulty regarding passports. It '£. possible that this will eau.se the trip to be abandoned, and that Bee, Zuland and Matty wiii do "11 the.ir nicir.g this year iu the Dominion.

Janitor has not proved a good purchase for Mr .). S. Barrett. Soon after his arrival here he showed signs of lameness, and Ids chance of standing a preparation does not seem bright. Ho was withdrawn from the hurdle race atthe Akarca County meeting on Saturday, and will probably be given a spell.

V>". H. Thomson has the two-year-old Rod Pool, by All Red—lVliiripool, going along nicely. He is a good cut- of a youngster, who should develop into a useful performer next season.

Mr C. E. Cross has sent the Coronet gelding, SaJathiei. to Washdyke, to bo trained by S. Trilford. He has been off the scene for a long time, and has had every chance to recover from the trouble which brought about his retirement.

Art and Banian, the two hurdlers in R. Longley's stable, are getting through i\ iot of useful work, and they should be in good fettle when set- more severe tasks for autumn engagements.

Flying Start, who had to bo. spelled r.v the, end of last year, is again in full commission,-and is hitting out freely in hi;- tasks. Even with the handicap of i.r.sound respiratory organs, he is one • t '.lie best norses about here up to ii?ven furlongs.

Mr I). H. Roberts has definitely de'■''dod to rctiro Kilmeny from the race track. He was a radlv good hurdler in his day, but he has been on the down ;;:udo for some time, and his owner appears to hare taken the wisest course in throwing him out of commission.

It. is intended to have Bore operated on for wind troubles, aud he will probably have a long speli before he races again.

The South Canterbury gelding. Crib, Jaas resumed work after a spell.- It is intended to give him a trial over steeplechase fences. Oxenhope. in the same ownership, is quite fresh, in spito of a busy season's racing. There was a report some time ago that lie was to be relegated to hurdle racing, but nothing of this sort is likely to eventuate.

S. Trilford has sent Bombproof home to his owner, and he will be given a Jong spell. The Royal Fusilier gelding ehowea some pace in the spring, but. unsoundness has barred the way to a successful career so far.

The defeat of Wolaroi in the Victoria St Leger on Saturday would probably bo regarded as a surprise, as he was generally looked on as the best three-year-old In Australia. This was not the first time that Colbert had shown ?ocd form; however. In the spring he filled third place, behind Kilbov and Eastcourt, in the- Australian Jockey Club's Derby, "Wolaroi being one of tho unplaced lot.

Headwind ha? been the most unlucky performer of the autumn campaign in

KACIKG km "IROIBKG KOIE

f Australia, so far as it has gone. He { was second to Woorak in tho Qakleigh Plate, the chief sprint event of tJie Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting, and on Saturday he was just beat on Iby Poke rates in the Newmarket I Handicap. He is by Malster from ' Fairwind. an imported in are by Car- ' bine.

Four of the Highden yearlings will bo scut to Sydney for the Easter sales.

F,. Manso.n, who won the Dannevirke Cup on Teka, goes into camp next week.

Ladv Comely, who finished third in the Victoria Racing Club's Sires' Produce Stakes on Saturday, is a half-sister to lihneter.

Beltane, runner-up in the Dannevirke Cup iast week, has been placed seven times this season,-but so far has not scored a win.

Thrice, winner of tho Sires' Produce Stakes at the Victoria Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, is a two-year-old brother to Three, a speedy sprinter who did some racing in New Zealand, but who is now in Australia.

The result of the Essendon Stakes, the weight-for-age event at the Victoria Racing "Club's meeting on Saturday, leaves little doubt that Patrobas is tlie best horse in Australia over a distance at the present time. He was off the scene in the spring, but the rest seems to have done him no harm, as he has won three races during the last fewweeks, and looks like capturing a few more before the close of the autumn campaign. FJL; reappearance is very opportune, as there, are not many good colonial horses available for the weight-tor-age events

J. O'Shea rode three winners at the Dannevirkc meeting, and still heads the list of successful jockeys.

It is probable that Bunting will be sent to Australia before long, with several of Mr E. 'J. Watt's other horses. Sarah Grand scored her first success this season when she won the President's Handicap at Dannevirkc, last week.

The Hawke's Bay hurdler, Diavolo, is at, present having a spell, as a result of injuries to his legs, through being tangled in a wire fence. x ._

Mr G. L. Stead intends to give the Australian bred gelding, Plymouth, a trial as a steeplechaser. He may make his iii-fat appearance over country at the autumn meeting of the Auckland Lacing Club.

Teka has won nine races this season, his earnings in stakes being about £1.500. lie was purchased from his breeder, Mr G. Hunter, M.P., for £25, but after he had shown some form this seasou a half share was disposed of for £250.

Sabana had never won a race prior to capturing the Maiden Plato at Dannevirkc. As a two-year-old she was rated highly, but she failed to realise expectations. The filly is a half-sister to Favolva, but there is a vast difference between the form of the pair.

Kilboy, Sasanof and The Toff, who represent- the- best three-year-old form in th. Dominion, have been nominated for the Auckland Racing Club's meeting. Other representatives from South Island stables are Koesian, Sweet Corn. Bet?, Zulatul, Wi.shful and Plymouth.

A writer in a London contemporary doubts whether any thing is gained by taking a horse's girth measurement, and says if it were only a question of the horse with the biggest girth being the best, then Royal Fern (82in) and Prince Rudolph (SOin) shook! have been topnotehers. Com men girthed 79iin, Melton Toii'i, Bend Or V4in and Galopin only 7Uin. Garbino's girth was 73-^in-

A sale of thoroughbred stock, in the estate of the late Mr Ji. Ga is ford, was lioAi at Daniieviike last- week. Tlie Ihree-year-oid filly Sabana, by Rokeby— Stcpka, was passed, ami will remain in .1. Sullivan's stable- Jingle (dam of Captain Jingle) was not sent into the ring. Iter yearling coil by Form by was purchased by Mr J. .Adams, owner of BairnsdaJe, for 20-gs. Mr E. J. Whyte gave '2l gc- for Martyress. Tuneful (iiymertus—Pjeun), with hily foal at foot by Quarantine, changed hands for logs. A hay mare by Tho Page --Tradacvnmare, with «iiiy foal by Formby, fetched ll ; gs:. The other lots were passed-

After racing at- the Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting, the West- Coasto'.vned pacers, Peony and Lucy "Wallace, returned here and have been left, in charge of K. H. Smith. Peony, who won the chief event- at- Wanganui and finished second to Albert- Wallace on the second day, will be taken to Timam, U> compote at that meeting on Thursday.

The secretary of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association has received information from the Railway Department ihat a special horse tram will leave Christchjirch on Thursday morning, at six o'clock, in connection with the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting.

The pacer Imperial Perfection is now "being trained by A. Pringle at Ashburton. As a three-year-old Imperial Perfection was one of the most' promising of his age, and emikl muster nn a lot of speed. He finished second to Prince Akwood in the New Brighton Derby of 1015, and Inter Avon over a short course. He "was gelded and turned out for a long spell, but a few months ago be was put into work again.

The Nelson Jockey Club's meeting will be held ou "Wednesday and Thursday. The club has received fair acceptances for the trotting events, and I hear that A. Fleming will ba racing a team there.

Amongst the latest enlistments is A. G. Wilson, the well-known New Brightton trainer.

Mr C V Hudson, of Dnnodin,-is i\ keen enthusiast hj: the breeding of trotters and pacers, though he takes very little interest in their racing. About three years ago he imported from Amer:ea the siallion Russell Patch, and the horse has done stud duty in the Dominion since that time. Later, he imported Loreno Todd, and hast year hef made his best, purchase to date, when the stallion Copa de Ora came to thei Dominion as his property. Mr Hudson's latest importation was easily the highest grade and best performed stallion ever brought here. Copa de Ora hod shown exceptional speed on the race tracks in the land of his b'rth, and had paced a mile in less than two minutes. He was a free-legged pacer, an exceptionally handsome horse, fall of quality. Arriving in this country, ho was leased by Mr H. W. Kitchingham, and last stud season was at the disposal of breeders, serving a limited number" of mares. The horse, although not looking in stud condition, found great favour with breeders, and early in the season his list was full. In conversa-

tion with H. Gaskell, Mr Ititchingham's private trainer, at the last, meeting at For bury Park, he stated that' Copa de Ora had finished his stud season in Canterbury, and that ho had taken the horse to Xhmedin to his owner. At the Akaroa County Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, I learned with regret that Copa de Ora had died during tho week from acute inflammation. The loss is a severe one for Mr Hudson, and everyone will regret the death of his horse, after only one season at the stftid.
