He, therefore, entitled to receive the amount he originally paid for the land to Luke Webb in 1866. In the opinion of the Lands Committee the petition of Herbert Wells and ten others, praying the Government to acquire the Whitecliffs Estate for closer settlement, should be favourably considered by the Government. When the report was received Mr M'Callum strongly protested against the Lands Committee being used rs a jobber for the sale of high-priced land. Mr E. Newman, chairman of tho Lands Committee, replied that the land was very suitable for soldiers' smal' settlement. Mr Okey told the House that the surrounding settlers were willing 10 substantially help any soldiers put on the estate. TE AP OH A LEASEHOLDERS. The appearance of tho annual " Washing-up " Bill to-day led several members to inquire expectantly whether there was any clause about the Te Aroha leaseholds in it. " No," said the Prime Minister. "Wo are awaiting a more suitable opportunity." The House laughed over this avoidance of a highly controversial matter.
