With two picture theatres building, and £233(3 worth of 'building permits issued by the council for the past fortnight (while the next fortnight will show as much or even more), £nd between. two and three thousand pounds worth of property sold by one firm alone, during that period, New Brighton may be.said to he stirring with a vengeance. The business activity mentioned is all the more remarkable when the times are taken into consideration, and is a good indication of the progress of the borough. WOMEN'S NATIONAL RESERVE. The coin and gift afternoon organised* by the Brighton branch of the W.N.R. to rawe funds for sailors' ditty bag's, was held in the Cafe Esplanade, on Thursday afternoon, and was in everyway a brilliant success. The kindness cfMraydMrs Johnson, of • the Cafe, who were untiring in their efforts to do their utmost for the comfort of all, contributed in a largo measure to the success of tho gathering. Mrs Ham Tier. president of the New Brighton branch, received the guests, who numbered eighty, including Mr Tobin, Mrs Bustle and Mrs Hill, members of the Burwood branch. During the afternoon, Mrs Marriner, president of the Sumner branch, and Mrs Hastie gave addresses'on tho Navy. Songs wore . given ■by Mrs Wilson and Mrs White. Miss Maindonald contributed piano solo, and Miss Goodwin a recitation, and afternoon tea was dispensed
