.Mr R. Semple arrived from "Wellington to-day. To-day's visitors to Christchurch include Messrs A, M'Cosh Clark (Auckland) and S. Pryor (Oaniaru). Mr D. A. Aiken, general manager of the United Steam Ship Company, arrived from the north this morning. Surgeon-General Henderson arrived in Christchurch last night and went on to Wellington. He has been on a visit to Dunedin in connection with the scheme to have some kind of military training amongst 6tudents of the Medical School at the Otago University. He was accompanied on his visit by Major Sleeman, who also went to Wellington last night. Mr C A. E. Ferguson, who has been connected with the legal firm of Messrfe Duncan, Cotterill and Co. for :he past twenty-three years, has rejianed his position as accountant owing to ill-nealth. Before leaving the office ue was presented with a travelling rug ar.d cigarette case by the staff of the firm. Mr Ferguson will leave next week for the North Island, and will be absent for several months.
After the curtain was lowered at the performance of "H.M.S. Pinafore" at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday night, the company assembled on tno stage and several presentations were made. Mr Sidney Williamson handed to Mr Tom Pollard on behalf of Mrs Pollard, a silver vase 6uitably inscribed, assuring her of tho Christchurch Glee and Madrigal Society's appreciation of her husband's untiring energy and patience during the rehearsals under his control, and a box of ciga«B for himself. Mr Williamson also a-sked Mr Nat Woods to accept on behalf of Mrs Woods an easy chair from tlie mombers of the .company, and a box of cigars,for himself. Mr Nat Woods then presented Mr Williamson with an armchair as a token of the esteem in which he is held by members or the Glee and Madrig«ii .iSociety, and as a slight appreciation ef his work in training and the patience and ability ho had displayed under very trying circumstances during the period ©f rehearsing tho opera. Each of the Recipients suitably replied.
