An officer home on a few days' leave tells the following etory:—" Evans is a good cook, but ho does not know French, so he comes to mo for the names of things. Lately ho learned a?ufs, and I had delicious frosh eggs. One day he brought me a boiled fowl, and I asked him, 'How did you get it? Do you know the French .word for chicken?' ' 'I don't,' said Evans, 'but the old woman jabbered, " Vou-lea-vous des aiufs?" and fetched ono. I pointed to it and said, very loud, "Jo voulez mamma of these ccufs," and she understood mo.' "
