HEAVY HANDLING CHARGES IN ENGLAND. [Paa Press AssocumoN.j WELLINGTON, July 20. The allegation of a newspaper correspondent that the Imperial Government makes a profit of 12s 6d on New Zealand lambs sold to private consumers in London, was brought under tho Prime Minister's notice by Mr Witty, the result being' an interesting statement by Mr Massey. Ho said that part of the New Zealand mutton bought by the Imperial Government was used for the troops, but none oi the lamb. Correspondence had been passing with the High Commissioner on the subject. Instead of costing 2d a pound to place lamb an the London market, he was in a position to state that the cost was 2|d. There were many charges unheard of before the war. Owing to scarcity of shipping heavy storage charges had been paici in • New Zealand, where two million carcases were in store now. At the other end tho authorities kept three million carcases in store as a reserve.
