There are conflicting accounts of the internal conditions in Germany. Though fear of defeat is growing* the nuthori, ties are making intense efforts to preyvent tho public understanding tho significance of tho Sommeaoffe.nsivc. Tho public are hypnotised by means of lying messages from newspapers of neutral countries which are in German pay. The general impression of politicians is that Prir.ce Bulovr is about to supersede Dr von Bethmann-lloUweg as Chancellor. The food problem continues acute, The failure is reported of efforts to persuade tho .southern states to permit exportation of foods in order to secure equal distribution. Hie Prussian authorities strongly resent the action of the southerners.
the failure of the kitchens on wheels the problem of communal feeding in Berlin is being solved \by huge public dining halls. . At the first the kitchen has sixty-fiireo boilers, holding thirty thousand litres of food. Hundreds of women arc employed proparing infeals, using electrical potato cutting machines, gas and other lalxjur-SBving appliances. Specially constructed motor-cars carry food to the distribution depots. The* following is a week's bill of fore-Monday—Rice and potatoes. Tuesday-—Meat. "Wednesday—Beans and fat. . Thursday—Meat and macaroni. Friday^—Beans and potatoes. Saturady—-Cabbages and potatoes. Sunday—Minced meat and potatoes. A portion equal to a litre is 6old for fourpence, and 250,000 litres are sold daily.
