DESPERATE FIGHTING. i A NIGHT-LONG BATTLE. By Telegraph—Pre-3S Association—Copyriffhi Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, (Received July 20. noon.) LONDON. July 19. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the German. attack during the night was directed against now positions east of Bazentin village. Very large German j reinforcements wore collected' for this ! attack, and after on intense artillery preparation tho first assault was de- , livered in dense masses at 5.30 in the afternoon. Fighting continued the night long, and v.-as particularly violent at Bolville "Wood. After suffering very heavy losses tho enemy succeeded in recapturing a portion of tho ivood, and obtained a footing in tho northern outskirts of Longucval. The struggle continues violently. German attacks elsewhere, including threo .separate attacks on Waterloo Farm, completely broke down before our ihv. There has been no event of importonce on the rest of the front.
