English is spokeu by 2/.3 per cent of the whole, German 2:2.2, AvUcsian 17.1, French 11.9, Italian and Spanish 8.0 each, and Portuguese 4.3. In 1601 the English lancuiaee ranked fifth, being spoken by 20,^0,000.
