MR ALPErIoKJSE WEST COAST POPULACE ENTHUSIASTIC FOR COMPULSION. Tho impression made on Mr O. ■ T. J. Alpers during his recent visit to the West Coast is that the people theie are strong for compulsion. Ho went to Westport at the invitation of the Mayoi and the Patriotic Committee on lnesdav to deliver an Anzac Day speech. He made compulsion prominent m nib remarks. He believes that •nn overwhelming majority of those present, are in favour of applving that principle, and that they represent the general I feeling on the West Coast. # j Mr" Alpers spoke at an open-air meeting in'tho afternoon, attended by about 5000 persons, and. at a crowded j meeting in Cadzow's Theatre in the evening. At the latter he advocated tho cl-iainis of the Red Cross Society. Later.on he was invited by the Patriotic ' Committee of Greymouth and Hokitika to speak in those centres, but the train arrangements were not suitable and he could not accept the invitations.
