■ -■'<» Dr J. Hight and Dr Chilton returned from the north this morning. Lieutenant F. J. Shaw, eldest son of A. F. E. Shaw, Fitzgerald Avenue, will leavo for Trentham on Monday evening. Several persons have, claimed the honour of being the iirst European child born in Canterbury after the arrival of the. first, four ships on December lfi, 1850. The rigbtful claimant, Apparently, is Mrs Margaret Neville, whose maiden surname was Whitmore." Her parents came in the CVessy, and she v.as born at I.yttpltnn on January 22, 1R.")1. A copy of the Church records, sjttested by Canon Coates, supports Mrs Neville's claim. Tt is understood that Mr 0. I. Jennings. Mayor of Rangiora, ha,s been approached by several members of Parliament with requests that, she should consent to be nominated for the vacaiicy on the Board of Governors of Canterburv College, caused by the retirement of Mr George Reimie,, on account of his impending departure for the North Island.
