MANY ACTIVITIES. BRITISH RAID SUCCEEDS. Tho High Commissioner reports: LONDON, April 28 (2.20 p.m.) A British official message on Thursday savs that last night tho. Bedfordshire Regiment carried out a siiccassful raid near Carnoy. The raiding party rushed the enemy trenches, and, after hand-to-hand fighting, drovo tho remaining Germans into dug-outs and bombed them there. Thq, German loss was considerable south of Frelinghien. The enemy, under cover of a bombardment, entered our trenches, but were immediately driven out. Last night an enemy attack at Hdl (30 was repulsed. At the same timo the enemy gained a footing in one of our sap heads north of Hill 60, but were driven out by our bombers after much artillery fire. An attack at St Eloi was repulsed last night. Tho enemy gained a footing m a crater in the Hohenzollcrn section, but were driven out immediately. The enemy sprang mines south and east of Sonchea, and in the north-east a double crasher, and. north-east of Vermelles and west of Hulluch. We sprang a mine in the Hulluch sector. This morning tho enemy discharged gas and put an artillery barrage between our lines north of Loos. Afterwards, by means of a second gas cloud and heavy artillery fire, the enemy gained a footing in our front support lines east and north-east of Loos. Within half au hour Irish troops drove out the enemy, who left many dead. The enemy's attack south of Hulluch was enfiladed by machine guns. Tho few Germans who reached our lines were driven out. Yesterday there were nineteen air fights. The pilot of tho enemy machine reported clown yesterday was.shot through the heart and the observer through the body, the machine falling 14,000 feet. One of our reconnaissances drove off eight hostile machines and brought down one. Two of our machines were damaged, but all returned safely.
