BIG FAIR IN COLOSSEUM. A very elaborate fair was opened in the Colosseum last night, by the Public Services Gioup, practiea.llv all sections contributing to the work. Tho Colosseum had been convorted into a regular fairyland, and the splendid and beautiful decorations reflected great credit on those responsible for them. Tho opening of the fair was preceded by a torchlight procession through the city, in which the Fire Brigades and the Tramway Band and Minstl'el Troupe took part. ' A very largo attendance greeted the workers as a result of their efforts, and the various stalls, side-shows and attractions did good business. Large crowds attended the lecture on electricity given by Mr E. E. Stark, city electrical engineer, and generous patronage was accord'ed the excellent display of the Post and Telegraph section. In its stall, this section, under the direction of Mr O. S. Plank, has erected a series of exhibits, mainly telephonic, dealing with the various periods of the message transmission development, ranging from the very earliest days up to the present automatic l and wireless systems. Another very interesting exhibit was that of the Harbour Board, including one of full-rigged "wooden walls " of old England, models of the board's dredges, and samples of the "catch" of a suction dredge. The things the dredge has sucked up from the bottom of the harbour are astonishing, and include stones, weights and cannon balls. Other stalls are the stamps,' art union, lands department, palmist, ice cream and sweets, tobacco, fancy goods, Christchurch railways, tea rooms, produce and flowers, fruit salads, agricultural department, and the various money-catching and popular side-shows run by the City Council and Railway Sections. During the evening a tug-of-war competition was commenced, with the following results:—Tramways beat Jarrah Timber Company, Railway Maintenance beat Lvttelton Harbour Board works. Christchurch Drivers beat Sailors' Home, and Telegraphic Linesmen beat Railway Casuals B. The competition will be continued to-night. Musical items were contributed by the Tramway Band and Troupe, Miss Cocker. Messrs Koskella and Harrington, and "The Two Macs." Miss Lucy Grantham played the accompaniments. To-night a post office will be opened and letters posted in the building will be defaced with a special stamp defacer. The fair will reopen this evening at seven o'clock. A meeting of the executive committed will be held in the Canterbury Jockey Club rooms to-morrow, at 3.30 p.m.
