CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The council of tho Canterbury Chamber of Commerce met yesterday afternoon, the president, Mr H. S. Bourn, being in tho chair. Before tho business of the meeting "was commenced, the president referred to tho death of Mr E. G. Staveley, a member of the council and-past president of the chamber. A resolution of sympathy with his family in their bereavement was passed, the members standing. Mr A. Kayo reported having attended the meeting of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce in Wellington on Wednesday. The president thanked Mr Kaye for representing the chamber on the occasion, aud in view of his shortly leaving for England wished him on behalf of the members " bon voyage" and a safo return. Colonel Logan forwarded statistics of exports from Samoa'for 1915, which were received with thauks. The Government Statistician replied to a letter asking that threshing: returns should be published weekly, that as the returns from threshing mill owners were only collected monthly, more frequent collection was impracticable. He was, however, willing to consider any suggestion for the earlier publication of the results. The matter was referred to the Produce Sectional Committee.

The Department of Commerce stated that it had received a communication from the Mercantile Adjustment and Protective Service, India, asking to be placed in communication with buyers of various articles, including Mirzaporo carpets. • The Prime Minister replied to a letter in connection with importation ol enemy goods, that the matter was receiving close attention by the- Customs Department. Messrs Skelton, Frostick and Co. wrote in reply on the subject of "collect " telegrams, pointing out that *t was becoming a tax on business houses. The chamber regretted that it could not see its way to ask the Government to abolish the system. The Director of the Technical College wrote asking for the annual c6ntribution of the which it was decided to grant. The editors of several trade and technical newspapers wrote asking for the support of the chamber in urging the British Government to give technical and trade newspapers facilities in the matter of supplies of paper for continuing their work. The letter was received. Mr D. J. Evans, Hokitika, wrote asking for information with regard to the incorporation of a Chamber of Commerce which it wa.s proposed to form for "Westland. It was decided that the information should be supplied. The St John Ambulance Association ■wrote expressing appreciation of tie assistance of the chamber in granting the use of the hall for French Red Cross Day.
