OBITUARY.

EDMOND GEORGE STAVELEY. The death took place yesterday of Mr E. G. Staveley, for- many years a prominent citizen. Mr Staveley was horn in Victoria in 1855, and was educated in Australia and England. After leaving school he was trained for a commercial career. For eight years he was a member of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, but in 1883 lie joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company as stock salesman in Christelinrch. a position which his deep knowledge of stock enabled' him to fill with' conspicuous success. He occupied several other positions in the company's service. Tn 1894, however, in conjunction with the National Mortgage and Agency Company, be entered into business as a wool and grain merchant in Christ-church, and as pro-

prietor of Tattersall's Saleyards. Tn 1895 he joined the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company again, taking the position of manager of tho Christchurch branch. He continued in that position until 1911, when he resigned, and once more ,entered into business on .bis own account, opening an office in Cflshel Street as a grain and. produce, merchant. Mr Staveley was a skilful auctioneer, and bis talents in that direction were often used by the Loan and' Mercantile Agency-Company, and'also at public auctions for l philanthropic purposes. ' He was a prominent member of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, and at different times was president of .both those bodies. He was a member* of the Canterbury Club and at one time occupied the position of . president. .He was also a member of the Canterbury Woolbrokers' Association, and a director of tho Canterbury Saleyards Company. Although he did not seek public honours, he was interested in all public affairs, and took an active part in "many movements. for the good of the community. The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning at the Linwood Cemetery.
