AMUSEMENTS.
.GRAND THEATRE. To-day will see the introduction to Ghristchurch audiences of the first of the famous "Metro" films, when the Grand Theatre, which lias the exclusive rights for this city, will screen " The Second in Command." The success achieved by the "Met™" Company has been phenomenal, but it* great triumph came at the San Francisco Exposition on what was termed " Moving Picture Day," when all Sari Francisco was emblazoned with billing of moving picture productions. The result was that 70,000 people were drawn to the grounds. Mr Francis X. Bushman and Miss Marguerite Snow presented the silent drama, " The Second in Command" and were rewarded with a remarkable demonstration from the large crowd. In the evening an official dinner was given to Mr Bushman. Miss Snow and the i: Metro" representatives, when Mr Bushman was proclaimed the greatest of all picture stars. The next " Metro'.' film, which will bo shown hero next Monday, will be "The Shooting of Dan M'Grew," in which Edmund Breese takes the leading part. In addition to " The Second in Command" will be shown the sixth instalment of "The Black Box," which is statodl ffco be quite as thrilling as ita predecessors. QUEEN'S THEATRE. Miss Clara Kimball Young, who is considered to be one of the best allround actresses in tho "movies." and the winner of the recent beauty; competition in America, is the star in the World Film sensational drama, "The Deep Purple." which will be shown at the Queen's Theatre all this week, commencing to-day. A notable cast, including Milton Sills, assisted Miss Young in tho production of this picture. Miss Young plays the part of an innocent decoy, around whom the action of the drama is thrown. An unsophisticated country girl, she suddenly finds herself flung into a seething turmoil of New York underworld life. She is the guileless tool of an unscrupulous band of villans, to whom cheating, deception and robbery come naturally. The girl's beauty, simplicity, loyalty and devotion are well simulated by Muss Young, who works hard in many trying situations. There will be a strong supporting programme.
