The annual meeting of the Canter- ! bury Bee Circle will be held this evening at 7.30 o'olock. At the close of the business a social hour and entertainment will be spent among members and their friends. The Christchurch Poultry Club has decided to reinstate the £5 cup for the best cockerel in its annual show. The New Zealand _ Utility Poultry Club's twelfth egg-laying competitions commence to-morrow. During the past week the whole of the houses anu scratching sheds were thoroughly cleaned out and disinfected. _ The sleeping j houses have all been whitewashed, and I straw a.foot in d'epth has been put in the scratching sheds to keep tho birds comfortable and busy during their confinement in the winter, months. The new single pens were completed early in the week, and have been very favourably commented upon by the competitors. The building is 42ft long by 12ft deep, 6ft 6in high in front ana sft 3in high at the back, which is made of incli wood, the Toof being covered with corrugated iron. The front of the house is enclosed .with bird-proof wire-netting, and is used (except at the back, which is boarded 1 out 3ft) for the thirteen divisions with a board at top and bottom. Ingress to the pens is j obtained by a door at the side of No. 1 i pen* but each bird can be fed and watered without going into the building. Drop-boards are provided for each apartment, and tho perches are suspended! from the roof by wire, and made firm' by wires and staples in the ; back wall. The perches do not touch the walla' at any point. The whole of i the plant'bears a bright and clean apj pearance" and reflects much credit on the club. During this afternoon the local members and the officials have had a busy time checking the seventyeight competing teams which have arrived from all parts of the Dominion for this contest, which commences row."The writer of these notes has received fronr £ leading Australian breeder an inquiry, for a choice exhibition White Wvandotte cockerel, who is desirous of exhibiting "at* early shows. Mr Fs Oivtßrown, the , Government Poultry Expert, has been invited to judge the heavy breeds, in the utility 'section at the. Christchurch <show. The tender, of the ff Lyttelton Company to print. tie Christchurch Poultry Club s prize schedule and catalogue has 'been accepted. The club's printing c has been' entrusted to the "Times" Companj for the past eight years. ' * . • talker, the well-known Silver Wyandotte breeder, left on a visit to Dunedin to-day. i P. The property which Mr Wilson had leased at Timaru has been cut up and sold. Mr Wilson informs me. he has some good birds on hand, but that the early cookerels are moulting their hackles and tails at present. The younger birds promise _to be top-notghers, and Mr Wilson is looking forward to being strongly represented. at the Christchurch show. Mr J. Tindall has i purchased the whole -of Mr J. H. Shaw's choice Silver Wyandottes. They are unquestionably the finest line of cockerels in the Dominion, and as the president of the South Island Wyandotte Club remarked, "It is questionable if ever a better laced Wyandotte was shown at the Crystal Palace than Mr Shaw's most forward cockerel." Several of the cockerels have already been sold to prominent breeders by Mr Tindall. Mr Tindall. will be a big exhibitor at Christchurch, in both the open and utility sections. Mr C. R. Tovey, of Ashburton, went into camp on Wednesday. I understand he bred some very fine birds this season. I hope Mr Tovey will return safely and continue his hobby. The Utility Poultry Club has decided i to hold a_ young bird show on the first Tuesday in May.
