EVENTS OF THE WEES. [From Our Correspondent.] BOWLING. The oommittee have decided to finally close the green for the season on Saturday, April 29. All games unfinished in the club's doubles tournament on the above date must be forfeited. Mr 11. Durilop, of Shirley, very kindly donated 12'00 plants, for which he received a hearty vote of thanks. Two members of the club (Messrs F. Paul and A. G. Munns) donated and erected a notice board. They also received a vote of thanks. Messrs Paul, Drake, Cull and Beaumont, members of the Warehousemen and Commercial Travellers' Association from Brighton, havo been picked to play against the Ashburton Club at Ashburton to-day. It has been decided to hold a progressive doubles tournament 011 the Brighton green on Easter Monday. Members who intend taking part are requested to' hand in their names. WAR RELIEF FUND.

The final meeting of the War Relief Fund Committee was held in the Maori Tea Rooms last evening. WOMEN'S NATIONAL RESERVE.

A meeting of the Women's National Reserve will be held at Uncle Tom's Cabin, North New on Wednesday, at 3.30 p.m. Mrs W. Wood, president of the Canterbury organisation, will address the meeting. All women interested in the country's welfare are asked to attend. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING.

At Saturday night's shooting, Private Scndall' won the "Highest Score" medal with a score of 69, and with this score also secured the llotty " medal. At a practice held during the week the local team averaged 65, three members putting on 69. COUNCIL COMMENTS. The roadway on Esplanade South has been levelled, Councillor Holland rendering valuable assistance. The Recruiting Committee has almost finished a most successful canvass ot the single men of the borough, a number of onlistments being received. 'WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION. A special meeting of the "Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday, April 6. The report of the delegate to the convention held in -Wanganui last month was read. A Dominion Women's Christian Temperance Union patriotic effort is to bo mad© to raise funds for war purposes. The money so collected will be sent to the Young Men's Christian Association to be used as they think best for the moral and spiritual as well as the physical needs of our boys at the front. The great work of tlio Young Men's Christian Association is well known, and this effort to raise funds for this cause should appeal to all. At a previous meeting of the Women's' Christian Temperance Union £1 was passed in, that amount having been collected' for the Lady Liverpool Fund, and it was decided that the money should be spent upon condensed milk. The Fire Brigade held a full-dress practice on Monday night, the Mayor and councillors being present. The School Committee meeting was held on Tuesday evening; presents-Mr F. H. Christian (chairman), Mesdam.es Clark and Beeby, Messrs Buxton, Sintiock, Moore, Winny and F. Ward, secretary. Miss Olive Hunt has been appointed assistant mistress by the Board of Education. Tlip final meeting of the committee will take place on Apr:l 15, on account of the annual meeting of householders, at which a new committee will be elected on Ap'ril 17. The present committee has been renominated for election as a whole. RED ORQSS REPORT. The attendance during the past few weeks has not been up to the mark. Gifts of slippers were received with thanks from. j\lrs Strahan, also a large parcel of linen from Mrs Richards.
