BRIGHTON BREEZES.

EVENTS OF THE WEI. TO-DAY'S GALA. To-day's gala is the most important event of the year for Brighton. A large body of enthusiastic workers has concentrated all energies upon making this year's fixture the most successful yet held, the object being a big lift "for the Patriotic Fund, It-was mentioned at.one of last week's meetings that a certain minor position would j require to be paid. . Instead of agree- ! ing to the expenditure, and thus spoil- ' ing the hitherto unbroken re-cord of ! running all the positions by local effort, tils members of the executive m the room immediately subscribed the necessary money and a little over. The local members of tho Commercial Travellers' Club, Messrs Cull and Drake, have done a big thing for the gala in enlisting the support of the travellers, and these gentlemen, together with Messrs. Anderson, March and Kihblewhite, have done wonders in buying hoop-la gbods, etc. Never before has the gala project being! tackled in sugh a determined manner 'and- by such good " battler.s." The Mayor, Mr. J. A. Flesber, has been staying at the cafe during the past few days and supervising arrangements for the fete. The prooession to-night, starting from the school grounds at 8.30, should be a good event. The Fire Brigade, bandj commercial travellers in costume, and Surf Club members will take part, torches, coloured lights and Chinese lanterns being arranged for. The motor lorry concert party will also take part. Another big'fixture to-night is the picture show, gramophone, concert and variety show, to be held in the tram shed, which will be specially illuminated. The Tramway Board is ,' giving. great assistance with tho lighting arrangements on the foreshore aaid pier, and tnjat part will present a pretty sight. The commercial travellers will be the guests of Mr Johnson at the cafe for dinner to-night, THE HOLIDAYS. The borough was well patronised, during the holidays by day excursionists, but unfortunatelv the weather was not very good and many returned early. BAND CONCERT. Th<j band erave a concert, from the rotunda on Wednesday evening which was much appreciated. A cold wind, however, made matters rather unpleasant for players and audience. THE SURF CLUB. Members of the.Surf Club are playing a big part in tho gala this year, and the gold and black colours will be much in evidence to-day. Besides bearing all expenses in connection with its side-shows, the club has offered the rise of the pavilion to the travellers for the day. It is proposed that tho pavilion shall be closed for bathing for to-day... The secretary/ Mr A. G. Munns, has received a gold medal presented by the Royal Humane Society for tho life-saving event to be run off to-day. . OPEN-AIR CONCERT. Tho land agents' sub-section of thy professions and commerce group of the Queen Carnival held a successful openair concert and auction sale of gifts at

the band rotunda on New Year's night. The thanks of the committee are due I to Messrs Kibblewhite,' Anderson, Owfcs, Dunn/ Barlett, Gregory' .and Hutton for their generous ."assistance under very trying circumstances, as the high wind made matters very unpleasant for those conducting and-perform-, ing at the affair. ' Mrs Evelyn Clark, who arranged the concert and collected goods and money, d-ssires to acknowledge t v o undermentioned gifts:— Cheques—Mrs J. and the* Misses Ballantyne ;. cash and goods—Mesdames Eastwood, Taylor, Kibble-white, Jackn;.an, Jennings, Otley, Roberts, Bluett, Cooper, Joughin, Chappie, Wrathall, I Lilly, Dewsbury, Ives, Hawkins, Lock-! wood, Murray, Staniland, Stokes, Sin-; cork, M'Lelhnd,- Wood", J.
