RAIN AT LAST.

SOUTH CANTERBURY DROUGHT BROKEN. LIGHT RAIN IN NORTH CANTERBURY. The ''Star's" Timaru correspondent reports that at six o'clock yesterday afternoon a brisk shower fell in the port, and within half an hour this had developed into a steady rain, general throughout the South Canterbury district. The rain has come too late to save a heavy loss in ewes and lambs, but it will mean a groat improvement in the season's woolclip, tho lack of feed and prevalence of dust having proved very injurious to tho prospects hitherto. Twenty-four hours' rain now will save thousands of pounds worth of wheat. The early sown crops, have held on, though they have made but little growth, and a good soaking rain under present conditions of temperature would probably save the greater part of tho wheat crops in South Canterbury. In Christchjirch tho wind changed from uor'-west to sou'-west at about 10 p.m. yesterday, and rain clouds gathered during the night. A very light rain commenced to fall at about 6.30 a.m. to-day, but was too slight iu volume to <lo more than clamp the surface of the groutid. Slight as tho rain is, it will be welcomes by the amateur gardeners of the suburbs, raajiy of whom have been recently using water reckless of the cost, _in an attempt to counteract the withering effects of hot dry weather and frequent nor'-westers on their spring and early feummer bulb and root plants. There unfortunately seems little prospect of u heavier downfall, or even a lengthy continuance of tho morning's sprinkling, and the effect on agricultural crops in North and Middle Canterbury cannot therefore bo expected to bo ' very helpful.

COMPLETELY GONE. *~ j

A succession of colds, or even the neglect of a common cold, may cause inflammation of the mucous membrane to become chronic. This can be prevented by tho prompt use of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy at the first symptom of n cold. A few doses of it and the cold is completely gone. A medicine of such great worth and merit as Chamberlain's" Cough Remedy should be kept in every home where there are children. r ' )88
