GIFT FROM SCOTCH LASSIE. The honour of being the first Jewish soldier from New Zeuhuicl to_ be wounded at Gallipoli is eiaiiued by Busier Abraham Wachner, of the Now Zealand Med'ioal Corps, who went away with the main body. He took part in the Egyptian campaign. Ho was acting as a stret-eliei'-bearer at Gallipoli until June 11. On the date named, he was hit by shrapnel bullets in the right shoulder and arm, his wounds causing paralysis of the limb. . , When he was in hospital m Jhgvpt Bugler Wachner received a note in a pair of mittens to the following effect: "To the brave New Zoaknder who draws these mittens over his fingers a wee Scotch lassie wishes all good luck. Though we of the weaker sex cannot be Willi you in the flesh, you may be sure wo are always with you in the spirit. The mitten with tho thumb to the left is for the risrht hand. Sit in the shacl'e of the Sphinx and ink over that. If you still cannot find out which is for which hand, I will hcud you further directions if you require them of me." Bugler Wachner said ho thought lie had found out the meaning of tliei cryptical passago in the letter, but, nevertheless, he had written to the " wee Scotch lfissie.''
