THE PORT LINE.

AN IMPROVED SERVICE. About a. month ago the " Star " had occasion to comment adversely on the shocking state of the carriages that had done duty for. qui to a decade on the Lyttelton-Ohristchurch line. Many season ticket-holders soon got up in arms, with the result that a petition was sent to the Minister of Railways, requesting that the reproach should lie removed. The petition did not fall on deaf ears, and some days later the old carriages were substituted by others of a serai-modern type, which it was learned were filling the breach temporarily. Tho forecast turned out correct, and this morning travellers to the port were surprised to find that a considerable improvement had been effected in the service. Four carriages, spick and span from the workshop, were placed at the disposal of travellers, while extra comforts were provided to firstclass and second-class smokers, who were given a carriage each, the old combination car having been withdrawn.
