DEBATING CONTEST.

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. The Youns Mszi'r Christian Association concert hall was crowded on Saturday evening, when the prize* won at the recent competitions wore presented! by .the Mayoress (Mrs H. Holland). A splendid programme provided by prize winners, assisted by local urtisttf, was presented. 'i'ho foil raving contributed ileitis: —Misses Higgine. J;\»ler. Beaumont, Leigivton. Bosworth, Mrs .Bailey, and Messrs ft. "Malcolm, T. W. Rov.e, W. J. Mason, W. Bailey and F. Trewern. A huniofrous impromptu speech provided nincli amusement. The subject was well handled bv tho different speakers. Sir J. Caughlcy, M.A., the donor of the prizes, judged the i s-peakera -and garo hia award sis follows: V. A. Ituln 1, L. B. Quartormain 2, A. Cado 3. Tho other competitors wero—Hiss It. L. Dearsley, Miss H. B. Kobsrtson and Messrs P. Is". Ambler, W. J. Mason awl J. Stout. Tho subject was, " How men should propose?" Dobbs received the shield on behalf Oi: the Technical College. .Mr G0.53 congratulated tho College 011 its win, which, ho said, was thoroughly deserved. A eertiiicato to St Paul's for second place was received by Mr J. Stout on behalf of the club, «.nd » certificate to Canterbury College for third place was received by Mi .1,. W. See. Mr Go.ss paid a tribute to the work dono by the secretary, Mr F. N. Ambler, to the treasurer, Mr J. ]<\ M. Si-inear, and to Mi? 3 Carter and Mr W. J. T)obba and Mr 0. T. North fur work done on the executive. Tho judge», Messrs K. Malcolm, C. K. Salter (elocution). T. W. Rowc, A, T. Don. nelly (debating), 0. C. Hardie (literary), received a, small tofctn os a slight mar.': of appreciation for work done by them during tho competitions. On behalf of the society the president. Mr Goes, asked theiu to accept a very hearty voto of thanks, which was carried by acclamation. Tho evening; concluded with tho singing of the National Anthem.
